Two Common Car Accident Injuries

Car accidents are a time of extreme emotion and oftentimes chaotic activity. You are talking with emergency responders and police, witnesses and other occupants of your vehicle, and more. It can take time for both your body and your mind to process what has happened, which may mean that some injuries may be delayed. Two common car accident injuries often delayed are soft tissue and concussions.

Injuries Not Always Immediately Seen After Car Accident

Some injuries are immediately apparent; others may take a day or two possibly weeks to appear. Be aware of what signs to look for and seek medical attention when needed. Delayed symptoms will vary based on the injury you sustained.

Types of car accident injuries to watch out for.

Soft tissue injuries are when the muscles, ligaments, and tendons suffer bruising, stretching, or tearing (damage done to parts of the body other than bone). Your ligaments connect bones to bones and tendons connect muscles to bones, but muscles, tendons, and ligaments are considered soft tissue.

Symptoms to look for include:

  • muscle aches and pain
  • joint pain
  • limited flexibility and range of motion in the injured part of the body

There are many different symptoms, but in general, you might feel:

  • neck or upper back pain or stiffness
  • shoulder pain or stiffness
  • headache
  • dizziness
  • burning or itching sensation in the neck, shoulders, or arms.

Soft tissue injuries are not visible on an x-ray making them harder to diagnose and document.

Concussions are another type of injury that can have delayed symptoms. They can be very serious. Symptoms can include disorientation and loss of consciousness; other signs of concussion can be more subtle, including:

  • difficulty thinking clearly, concentrating, or remembering
  • weakness, numbness, or decreased coordination
  • headache that gets worse and does not go away
  • blurry or double vision
