Study Linking Nexium, Prilosec & Prevacid to Kidney Disease

Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) — such as the popular and well-known Nexium, Prilosec and Prevacid — are medications used by about 15 million Americans to treat heartburn, acid reflux and other gastrointestinal issues by lowering the amount of acid produced by the stomach.

However, a recent study by the Journal of American Medical Association reported a significant increased risk to patients taking these types of drugs for developing acute kidney failure and chronic kidney disease.

According to one of the study’s authors, Dr. Morgan Grams, an assistant professor of epidemiology at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, those who use PPIs have a 20 to 50% higher risk of chronic kidney disease compared with nonusers.

How PPIs May Harm Your Kidney

PPIs are meant to prevent the stomach from producing too much acid. Unfortunately, these medications affect the body’s ability to absorb vital nutrients, such as magnesium, a nutrient needed for the kidneys to function properly.

PPIs can cause magnesium levels to decline in the body. Reduced magnesium levels can result in damage to the kidneys. Although it typically takes time for low magnesium levels to do its damage, by the time symptoms appear your kidney function is already seriously damaged.

According to experts, PPIs may increase the risk for:

  • Acute kidney injury
  • Kidney failure
  • Acute interstitial nephritis
  • Chronic kidney disease
  • Kidney transplant surgery

Why File a Nexium, Prilosec or Prevacid Lawsuit?

When you take prescription medications, you rely on your doctor to recommend the best medicine for your condition. Your doctor relies on the drug manufacturers to provide safe, well-tested drugs for public consumption.

PPIs are a huge billion-dollar business for pharmaceutical companies with Nexium raking in $6 billion per year in sales. It’s sad to say, but sometimes profits mean more than the public’s safety.

Lawsuits send a message to the big drug companies that the public’s health must come before profits and it is your right to be compensated for any physical or mental injuries suffered and the related medical expenses caused by this lack of oversight.
