One of the kidney problems caused by Proton Pump Inhibitors like Nexium, Prilosec, and Prevacid may be Acute Interstitial Nephritis. Acute Interstitial Nephritis (AIN) is characterized by inflammatory cells infiltrating the interstitium of the kidney and may lead to acute kidney failure. Delays in diagnosis and persistent use of the drug causing AIN (such as Nexium, Prilosec, or Prevacid), can cause Chronic Kidney Failure.
Acute Interstitial Nephritis associated with Proton Pump Inhibitor usage often causes symptoms like fever, nausea, lethargy, extreme thirst, weight loss, or even just a general sense of discomfort or unease. The symptoms are non-specific and may show up after a few days or take years to occur. Over 100 drugs have been known to trigger Acute Interstitial Nephritis, but Nexium, Prilosec, and Prevacid are the most frequently implicated Proton Pump Inhibitors.
Another kidney problem associated with Proton Pump Inhibitor use is Chronic Kidney Disease. In October of 2015 the American Society of Nephrology published a study showing that Nexium, Prilosec, and Prevacid usage increased the risk of Chronic Kidney Disease by 10%. An additional study showed that users of Nexium, Prilosec, and Prevacid were 20-50% more likely to develop Chronic Kidney Disease than people who had never taken a Proton Pump Inhibitor. For consumers taking a twice-daily dosage, their risk of Chronic Kidney Disease increased even more.
Up to 50% of Proton Pump Inhibitor prescriptions are inappropriate. Share on XUp to 50% of Proton Pump Inhibitor prescriptions are inappropriate. Either a person takes the drug for too long — it’s only approved for 4 weeks of usage at a time — or it is used when it isn’t needed; it should be used to treat severe heartburn or GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease). AstraZeneca, the manufacturer of Prilosec and Nexium, has advertised their drugs as safe for long term use. The company made $80-$100 billion dollars in revenue over the past 12 years.
