Concussion-Sensing Football Helmets

concussion sensing football helmets

Football is a popular but dangerous sport. Players suffer many different types of injuries, from minor sprains to broken bones and more serious conditions including concussions and football-related traumatic brain injuries. Player safety is a major concern at all levels of the game, from high school to college to professional leagues.

Concussions are a serious concern for all athletes, but especially for those playing contact (or collision) sports like football. These injuries can lead to memory problems, concentration issues, speech impediments, headaches and more.

Today, a new technology is available that can help monitor the hits taken by players. Concussion-sensing football helmets are equipped with sensors to record this data, and are being adopted and tried out by some football teams.

Local High School Using Concussion Sensing Helmets

Football teams, like the Lee’s Summit School District, have made headlines for investing in smart helmets that track the number of impacts and when and where on the head they occur. Coaches see this as a way to help keep the kids safe, plus:

  • Coaches get real-time alerts if a player takes a major hit to the head.
  • It changes the way the game is taught to help prevent concussions.
  • It allows coaches to coach better.

Helmet sensors: do they detect concussions?

This technology does not prevent concussions; it does, however, give the team the ability to monitor players in real-time and indicate potential injuries.

Keep in mind: Just because a sensor has gone off does not mean that a concussion has been suffered by the player. Concussions still require a healthcare professional to assess and diagnose it.

“Experts suspect that for every player who is pulled from a game and diagnosed, another will have his or her injury go unnoticed, since only those who report feeling ill or display the most conspicuous signs of traumatic brain injury – such as losing consciousness or acting disoriented – are likely to be examined by a neurologist.”

Need More Information?

Head impact sensors help raise awareness of concussions and the precautionary measures that should be taken. It will be interesting to see how this technology evolves and performs.
