Lawsuits Against Monsanto/Roundup

In March 2015, the cancer-research agency of the World Health Organization (WHO) declared Roundup a “probably human carcinogen” based on evidence from several independent studies linking glyphosate exposure to cancer, specifically non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma (NHL).

Numerous lawsuits have been filed against Monsanto by farmers and other workers claiming occupational exposure to Roundup caused them to develop NHL. Plaintiffs claim Monsanto had a responsibility to warn consumers and regulators about the risk of non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma from exposure to Roundup, a popular weed-killer that contains glyphosate.

What is Roundup?

Roundup is the world’s most popular herbicide, a type of weed-killer and pesticide that has been sold since the 1970s.

It contains glyphosate, a chemical that blocks an enzyme plants need to survive, which has been linked to causing non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.

Today, Roundup is sprayed on crops including cotton, corn, soybean, canola and sugarbeets in the United States. Monsanto has made billions off “Roundup Ready” crops — crops that have been genetically modified to survive the herbicide enabling farmers to spray it over entire fields to kill weeds.

What is Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma

NHL is a cancer that can start nearly anywhere in the body. It is a blood cancer that grows in lymphocytes, which are white blood cells in the immune system that help the body fight diseases.

Benefits of an MDL

Coordinating the lawsuits in a multi-district litigation (MDL) will streamline the process and make it easier for people to join the litigation, helping to:

  • Improve the efficiency of the process
  • Eliminate duplicate discovery
  • Avoid inconsistent or conflicting rulings
  • Conserve the resources of the judiciary
