DePuy Attune© Knee Replacement Failure FAQs

Attune Knee Replacement FAQ

Knee replacement surgery (also known as arthroplasty) is a common orthopedic procedure used to relieve pain, give back mobility and return you to normal activities.

In a total knee replacement, the damaged surfaces of the knee joint are removed and replaced by a prosthetic implant made of metal, plastic or a combination.

The DePuy Synthes Attune Knee Implant System is one of the most popular knee replacement devices available, having been used in thousands of patients.

Recent studies link the Attune Knee System to high rates of premature failure involving the loosening of the tibial plate resulting in the need for revision surgery. In many cases, patients are considering or have taken legal action.

If you are considering the DePuy Synthes Attune Knee System or you are experiencing problems with an existing implant, here are a few things you should know.

Attune Knee Replacement Failure FAQs

Who is the maker of the DePuy Synthes Attune Knee Implant System?

This device is manufactured by Depuy Orthopaedics, which is a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson. It is a total knee replacement device designed to provide stability and range of motion.

DePuy Orthopaedics is primarily known for its total hip and knee replacement systems.

When was this device approved by the FDA?

FDA Black Box Warning InvokanaIt was first approved by the FDA in 2010 after determining that it was “substantially similar” to other knee replacement devices already on the market.

The device was marketed as being able to provide patients with increased stability and a better range of motion; however, the device has not lived up to these expectations.

Since its approval, the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System has received numerous complaints from patients who reported complications with the device necessitating revision or reconstructive surgeries.

While complaints to the FDA are on the rise, no recall has been made of the Attune Knee Implant system.

What is the problem with the Attune Knee Implant System?

Patients are reporting early failure of the system; many of these failures involve the loosening of the tibial plate. This unexpected loosening causes extreme pain, swelling and potentially other complications (such as bone loss, muscle damage, nerve damage, infection) that may result in revision surgery.

Does the Attune Knee System have a high rate of failure?

Most knee replacement systems are expected to last for 15 to 20 years. However, Attune Knee replacement patients are reporting early failure of the system, less than a year or two (some occurring within months) of the surgery rather than the expected 15 years.

What other complications and/or side effects can occur?

Besides the need for revision surgery, patients may experience:

  • Instability and loosening. When you stand or put weight on your knee, it may “give” out or move backwards or sideways.
  • Heat or warmth in the knee
  • Swelling around the knee joint
  • Joint pain
  • Infection
  • Device dislocation
  • Decreased range of motion
  • Popping, crunching or clicking sounds

What is a revision surgery?

Knee replacement xrayKnee revision surgeries are considered more painful and invasive than the original knee replacement because they usually require breaking the faulty device away from the bone. In many cases, the implant is cemented into place.

When a knee replacement prematurely fails, you can face many serious issues ranging from infections to muscle or nerve damage, bone loss and more. Revision surgeries are expensive and can result in many ongoing expenses.

What is a reconstructive surgery?

When an implant severely damages the surrounding bone, sometimes a reconstructive surgery is required. This means that the knee requires a complete rebuild before a replacement device can be implanted.

What can you do if you have experienced severe injuries from your DePuy Attune Knee System?

When a knee replacement prematurely fails, you can face many serious issues ranging from infections to muscle or nerve damage, bone loss and more. Revision surgeries are expensive and can result in many ongoing expenses.
